Game-Changing Tips Every Woman with Fine Thin Hair Needs to Know

I have struggled with my hair for my entire life. My hair has always been super fine. Fine hair means that the diameter of each strand is skinny. I not only have fine hair, but I’ve also had issues with thinning hair. Thin hair refers to the density or how many strands of hair are present on each square inch of the scalp. Combine fine with thin and you get hair that doesn’t have any weight, looks hollow in the baseline, and struggles to get volume.

My hair has gone through tremendous changes in the last year. Now, I did get a hair transplant about a year and a half ago and I talk all about my hair transplant journey in a series of videos that I did.

But there are a lot of women and a lot of men who get hair transplants and they don’t end up with the same results that I do. Their hair doesn’t look as great at the end of it all as mine has. My hair has completely changed.

So today I want to teach you a few of the tips and tricks things that I’ve implemented into my life to get me from there to here. Today I’ve collaborated with some of the amazing people at Lilysilk to talk to you and show you guys some of their products.

Now, I can genuinely tell you that this company is awesome. Lily Silk is one of those companies that worked with so many different celebrities. They’ve worked with Gwyneth Paltrow. Drew Barrymore made a post about them. Even Megan Trainor has talked about them, and I can see why because their products are awesome.

Silk Pillowcase

The first thing that you want to do is implement a silk pillowcase into your sleeping routine. You’re probably wondering, do silk pillowcases make a difference? The answer is yes, especially if you have my type of hair. So my hair is not only thin and fine, it’s also very curly and frizzy. Two things happen when I sleep on a cotton pillowcase.

The first thing is that I notice that I get a lot of breakages because my hair is so fine and also so curly that if it’s rubbing up on a pillow, rubbing up on a fabric that doesn’t have any slide, my hair tends to shift and it breaks easily since the texture of it is so, so fine and fragile.

Something else that happens a lot when I sleep on a cotton pillowcase is that my blowout or my style gets completely ruined. I do not have the type of hair and maybe you don’t either, where you can go to sleep and you wake up and it looks amazing.

People with fine or thin hair, tend to feel like they need to wash their hair every day because when they go to sleep, they wake up and it’s totally deflated or the curls have been crushed or there’s no movement or body in it at all anymore.

See, this is what was happening to me before I discovered silk pillowcases. When you sleep on this type of pillowcase, it preserves your style. You wake up and your hair still looks amazing.

And if you don’t believe me, honestly, try it yourself and let me know in the comments section if it made a difference for you because it has been night and day difference for me. If you are the type of person who doesn’t enjoy sleeping on a silk pillowcase or you don’t want a silk pillowcase, you can also get a sleep cap.

Now this is so nostalgic for me because I am Brazilian and my mom also has very textured, curly hair.

She would use a silk cap every single night, either to preserve her curls like her natural, beautiful texture or to preserve her blowout. If she went to the salon and got it blown out, or even if she blew it out at home herself, she would always wrap her hair in a cap and go to sleep with it that way.

And then when she woke up, it was still soft and bouncy and beautiful. And it’s so nostalgic for me because I remember her doing that every single day when I was a little girl.

So when I saw these sleep caps by Lily Silk, I thought, oh my gosh, this has been something that women of all generations with curlier hair or even with just finer hair have done. So I love that because I love this brand so much. I also want to mention that there’s a whole fashion line by Lily Silk. They have a wide range of blouses, pajamas, bedding, sets, dresses, everything. And the prices are affordable.

Considering that not all silk is equal and they use 100% natural premium materials like mulberry silk, they are also committed to zero waste production and are very environmentally conscious. Overall, it’s a win-win for me. I couldn’t say enough good things about it.

A double thumbs up for someone of my age working in the industry that I work in. I feel like it is not only breathable material, but it’s fashionable and makes you look very chic and mature. So I just love it. I think it’s amazing.

Styling Properly

The next thing that is going to change your life if you have very fine hair, is styling it properly. The first step always starts with a shampoo and how you’re doing that. You want to use a shampoo and conditioner range that is specifically tailored towards volume.

Using a shampoo for dry, damaged hair or a moisture shampoo range when your hair is thin or fine will weigh your hair down. You just don’t need the same amount of control that someone with coarse or thick hair needs.

When you are shampooing, make sure that you are focusing on the scalp and massaging that shampoo right in.

If you don’t get a lot of lather the first time, it’s because the shampoo is working on removing the oils in your scalp and the product buildup. Doing a second shampoo will ensure that your hair is properly cleansed and will not be weighed down. When you are conditioning again, you want to choose a conditioner specifically tailored for volume.

You want to avoid conditioning the scalp and just focus that conditioner on the midshafts and ends. Rinse thoroughly so that your hair does not weigh blow drying. Before styling, you also want to use a product specifically tailored for volume, like KMS add power or KMS add volume. One tip here is not to overdo it.

Volume products are really important, but if you use too much on fine hair, you could end up with a weighed-down effect as well. After you comb it through roots to ends, move on to the next step. Now, this next step is going to be a little bit controversial for some of you guys out there, and I already know, and I’m anticipating that there are going to be some wondering faces about this.

But I am going to tell you without a shadow of a doubt that if you have fine hair, the only way to get it to look full and beautiful is to blow it out. There is so much stuff online about preventing heat damage, and I get it. I do get it.

And you do want to be careful so that you don’t put too much heat into your fine hair and eventually break it. But I have fine hair. If I don’t blow it out, it’s not going to look as beautiful and as full as if I blow it out.

Really fine hair needs to be infused with a volume right from the wet stage. That is why it’s important to use something like a sleep cap or a silk pillowcase to preserve your style. So you don’t have to do all of these steps four times a week or five times a week. Y

ou only really have to do it about two times a week, max, three times a week. Because you’re doing that, it’s looking amazing, and then you’re preserving it overnight by not having it get roughed up in a cotton pillowcase.

Blowing your hair out is also going to ensure that the cuticle layers are smoothed down, which results in a glossier, shinier, and smoother result. When you have glossy, shiny, smooth hair, it tricks the eye into thinking that that hair is much thicker than it is. You can do this with a round brush. Or you can use a blowout brush, which is my favorite thing to do.

There are small barrel ones by Babyliss Pro. There are larger barrel ones by Revlon or by Drybar. This one is one that I purchased on Wish for super cheap, but it also works great.

Now, you can stop here, but if you have thin hair where the scalp is showing through the hair, I have a mind-blowing tip for you that is going to be life-changing.

So even though I did get a hair transplant, I still have thinning in the areas where my hair was transplanted. And that’s just because it was a very large bald area. And sometimes you need to do, like, two plus transplants to fill the area in.

So when I’m wearing my hair half up, you can still see that it’s quite fine in that area. But there is a trick to fix that. I recently discovered an awesome brand called Me Cosmetics, which is a clean, beauty dermatologist-tested scalp foundation.

I will not go to a client’s house for event styling without this product line anymore. Did you know that 50% of women experience hair loss at some point in their lives, and this product will hide it, like, completely in about 10 seconds?

This scalp foundation line comes in every hair color, including white, which is something that has been massively missed in the market. This is lightweight, it’s buildable coverage, and it has tremendous staying power.

I have used this on a lot of brides and a lot of mothers of the brides, and I have never, ever had it transferred.

I also use it on myself regularly, especially when I’m wearing my hair in a ponytail or a bun or anything. If my hair is up. I am wearing this and again, I have never had it transferred. I have tried doing other things like using eyeshadow. I did a whole tutorial on that.

That’s a really good economical option because you already have eyeshadow hanging around, but it will transfer and it’s not going to stay as well if you’re hot, if it’s summer, if it’s humid, all of those elements are working against you.

An eyeshadow is not going to stay like this scalp foundation is going to stay. I know a lot of you have also felt concerned that if you fill your scalp with powder, it could result in clogged pores and more hair loss.

But this is actually in use with ten active hair and skin-loving ingredients. It’s a win-win. It’s so freaking cool.
